Using lapping film for knife polishing is an excellent method for achieving a razor-sharp edge, a refined bevel, or even a mirror-polished blade finish—all with micron-level control.
Below is a complete guide to selecting and using lapping film for knife sharpening and polishing.
Attach to a flat surface (glass, granite, aluminum block)
Use PSA-backed (adhesive) film or spray adhesive for plain film
Alternately, wrap around a stropping paddle or sharpening block
Set your knife edge bevel angle (e.g., 15°–20°)
Use edge-leading strokes for sharpening
Use edge-trailing strokes for polishing/stropping
Use light to moderate pressure
10–30 passes per grit, depending on blade condition
Dry polishing is okay
For smoother action and less clogging, use:
Water, alcohol, or lapping fluid for Diamond/SiC
Avoid oil unless specifically formulated
Clean blade between each grit to avoid contamination
Inspect under light or magnification for scratch consistency
Stop when edge is mirror-bright and slices cleanly
Use 0.5 µm, 0.3 µm, or 0.02 µm film
Mount on a hard-backed strop
Use edge-trailing strokes
Delivers ultra-refined, hair-splitting sharpness
You can buy lapping films as:
Pre-cut sheets (6” x 1”, 6” x 3”, etc.)
Rolls or discs
Knife sharpening kits with multiple grits + backing plates
